1.  Introductions & The BMS GIF Course Website – take a good look through the course website. Please think about how you would like to contribute to the site as it is a collaborative growing archive. Because our class will technically end on Tuesday 6/14, it does not mean that our experience has to end. Lets view this site as a tool and a new networking hub that grows and expands over time. We discussed our class Resources Page, what are you going to submit tonight? You are expected to share your GIFs here on the site as well as sources of information discovered, inspiration and transcendent energies! Would you like to be added as an editor and author to our wordpress based site? E-mail me and let me know, if not, all other info can be sent directly to me via e-mail.

2. Suggested Syllabus – Like what you see, follow along, don’t like it? Feel free to hack, reorganize, restate, remix, reuse, re-contextualize and share your iterations. Customize and personalize, the syllabus is an open source variation of a “starting point” where do your learning needs and desires fit in? Define that and contribute. This can be done in the comment section below this post, or in a new blog post posted here in our news feed category, or the format of your choice that can be shared via a url. Or, in any other way you wish to share.

3. Instructor Ryan Seslow & Guest Artist / Teacher Jessica Fenlon – We are super happy and excited to share our work and techniques with you! Feel free to explore our websites and let us know if there are specific things that you see, that you would like to learn how to do. Snag those urls and share them in the comments section of this post below. Or, gather them and place them into a blog post on your personal site, your tumblr or your space on the web where you can share the url here.

4. Get your feet wet – Creating simple Remix based GIFs using Giphy,  Imgur and youtube (or your own short mp4 or mov video files) – The two GIFs above were done this way, How did you do? Lets see some of those remixes! Your first homework assignment was to that! Did it seems too easy? Well, maybe you need to push yourself a bit more, seemingly simple web tools can be strong allies in extending a simple loop. Those beginner loops can become great “assets” for future projects, especially in newhive. Add your first results below or share those urls with us via e-mail. Creating short sequence based GIFS like these may lead to creating supercuts!

5. Newhive! Did you sign up yet? Get on that! We took a brief tour of Ryan Seslow’s newhive for inspiration and will further examine and collaborate during session #2. Aside from your personal newhive account, our class also has a collaborative account, check out the class newhive here and e-mail me for the log in credentials so you can start hacking, adding, removing, unwinding, reconfiguring what it means to digitally collage with static and animated snippets of new media art. We touched on newhive’s ability to allow the user to embed iframe code into websites like worpdress (our class site) the animation below is embedded directly from newhive.

6. Preparing Content and Assets for digital art making on newhive and beyond. Photoshop is a fine tool, it is certainly not the only tool but it sure comes in handy when it comes to pre-preparing content for generating digital collages and related net and new media art works. Newhive greatly accepts this kind of media. The two frame GIFs above have transparent back rounds, they were created using photoshop. Using the magic wand tool to highlight and remove the back round, we have prepared the digital image “assets” to layer into newhive (and beyond) at will.

I found this image in an old art history book that was being discarded, the book was badly damaged but some of the images were still in tact. (Plus 20 points if you know the artist and the art work!) I saw this damaged book as inspiration and content. I cut out the figure and laid it down on a piece of white paper. I photographed it with my i-phone and imported it into photoshop.

I resized the image and made it a bit smaller. I used the Magic Wand tool and selected the negative space outside of the content I wanted to capture. I then used the keyboard short cut of pressing the “Command Key” and the letter “X” to cut away the selected area. The image below was my result.

 The file was saved – “saved for web” as a PNG-24 with the “transparency” feature selected. This allows for the content to remain transparent when imported into digital publishing fields like newhive. Lets get a series of these made!
